A brewer's hotel
William Menger opened Texas's first brewery on this spot in 1855. Travelers kept asking where to sleep, so in 1859 he built them a hotel next door. It's now the oldest continuously operating hotel west of the Mississippi.
The bar where the Rough Riders were born
In 1898, Theodore Roosevelt recruited volunteers for his Rough Riders inside the Menger Bar, an 1887 replica of a London pub that's still pouring drinks today, largely unchanged.
